POEM: “SYMPHONY IN WHITE” – by ABIGAIL MABRY
isn’t it funny that a man uses the intimacy and privacy
of a woman as his muse as a way to show his talent
we read and report on at 9:30 on a Tuesday morning
on a powerpoint of white dress and backdrop and
there she is standing on masculinity
cloaked as a howling head of a fur rug facing
our wish we hadn’t gotten out of bed today to study
traditional techniques that speak on sexuality
so thank you for illustrating women in this way
better than manet you’re the man put my bed
head on display now lets set our gaze
to the 19th century historian who believed venus
of urbino was a prostitute as well
as olympia’s manet must have heard through
the rumor mill and i want a painting of a woman
covered in plastic wrap with a sign in her lap
come and get it boys begging to be
recycled and that is not a cat it’s sex
a black accessory to a naughty daring girl
WOMAN trapped in that cute little
domestic sphere where critics view
her body as a link to a diseased cadaver
next to that damn black cat running through caricatures
meaning that she is realism
attracting attention to artistic paris
where she is hung on that grand white wall for
patrons and wanna be saints to mock her
maker in the universal exhibition why don’t you just
take that bitch to the funhouse museum
where he says he is a painter but oh we know
of himself the greats and the female nude
talk dirty to me hierarchy
of genres he’s coming for you
are a woman a beauty a piece of art
